Friday night, May 10th was an incredible show of the aurora borealis across the northern hemisphere. New England was not spared, as there are amazing photos of the event much farther south!

The cloud forecast had me down, but after looking at the cloud cover prediction from the NWS in Gray, Maine, I decided to set my alarm for 3AM and see what’s going on. Then, at the very least, I could capture sunrise images that are always lovely.

I had so convinced myself, that I recorded a video of my intentions. To me, this would be the motivation to actually do it and get up that early.

After loafing for a bit, I started to see incredible images coming from the Maine coast. This post from Benjamin Williamson peaked my interest!

This post motivated me to attempt to see them out my window. But even with the camera, it was so faint. It didn’t take me long to realize thought that the clouds cover had disappeared! This could be my chance!

I got dressed, grabbed my camera and headed out the door. As soon as I exited my apartment building, I was seeing the most incredible auroras I’d ever seen in my life! I pulled out my phone and got a few quick images to share my amazement.

It took me a while to get out of the parking lot because I was just staring at the most incredible auroras in the most mundane place. I was totally entranced!

When I finally got going, I decided to go to a scenic viewpoint about 10 miles north. As I was heading there, I started to see the cloud cover steadily thickening.

At my destination, it was completely covered. But I was able to capture the colors of the auroras through the clouds!

I ended my night not long after this. I went to a few other locations, but the clouds were getting worse.

After heading home, I did a short livestream of editing the photos I got.

In the end, I captured one photo that I am quite pleased with! Prints are available to purchase.
